What Is Auto Zoom in Screen Recordings?
Published 1 November 2026
Auto zoom is the camera move that follows the action in a screen recording, so viewers can read what you are clicking without squinting at a full-screen capture.
What auto zoom does
A screen recording shows the whole display, but the thing that matters is usually a few centimetres wide: a button, a menu item, a field. Auto zoom adds a virtual camera over the recording. It pans and zooms toward the part of the screen being used, then eases back out, so the viewer's eye is led to the right place at the right moment.
Why it helps
- Legibility. Small interface text becomes readable on a phone or in a video embedded in a help article.
- Attention. The picture moves with the action, so viewers do not have to hunt for the pointer.
- Pace. Done by hand, keyframing zooms is some of the slowest work in screencast editing. Drafting them automatically gets you to a reviewable edit faster.
How the camera knows where to look
There are two ways to find out where the action is. One is to record it while it happens: the pointer position, the clicks, the scrolling. The other is to look at the finished video afterwards and work it out from the frames. Cool Easy Cut supports both.
Recording a browser tab. The recorder keeps a quiet click log: where the pointer went, what you clicked and what it was called, when you scrolled. Press Initial Auto Edit and it drafts gentle pans and zooms toward where the pointer worked, along with labels at each click and cuts for stretches where nothing happened. This route needs no AI.
Uploading a video. A file has no click log, so the AI model you connect watches sampled frames and suggests camera moves along with cuts, annotations and panels. How AI editing works.
Drafts, not decisions
Automatic zoom is a starting point. Too much movement is tiring to watch, so you review the result in Preview and delete, move or retime any move you do not like. To aim a move yourself, use the Point tool (key P) and click the spot the camera should look at. Pressing the auto edit button twice is safe, and nothing touches the original recording.

The quick-start guide walks through both routes. Ten exports are free, so you can judge the camera moves on your own footage before paying anything.
